I was visiting my sister-in-law and her family when it happened.
Her boys have a Nintendo 64, and let's just say, when I'm around a gaming console, I turn into a geeky teenage boy with a bit of a potty mouth (which is why I don't own one). If video games were my addiction, then Mario Kart would be my drug of choice.
So I was battling the go-karts, with my Koopa shells and slippery banana peels, when suddenly, my nephew came out of left field, and zoomed past me into first place.
Naturally I was angry, who wouldn't be! I wasn't paying attention to my words when suddenly my nephew yelled out to his parents: "MOM, Auntie B just said the C WORD!"
I was horrified. I'll admit that I've dropped the occasional "S" bomb, but never has an "F" or a "B" ever been muttered from my mouth in the presence of babes. But the "C" word? I wouldn't be able to say that in private not to mention in any public situation.
"I would NEVER say the C word" I said in a voice two octaves higher than my own.
"Yes you did Auntie B" said my nephew. "You said 'OH CRAP!'"
"Oh...THAT'S the C word?" I said, trying to hide my smile while wiping the sweat from my forehead.
I could hear my sister-in-law and husband giggling from the other room.
"Yes, what did you think the C word was Auntie B?"
"Ummm...let's play again shall we? You can have first pick this time..."
It seems as though everyone has a different list of 'bad words' in their home. While I hadn't thought of 'crap' as a bad word at the time, I realize now as a mom that it's not so appropriate in front of little ones.
And as for the other C word? Well that will remain exempt from my vocabulary, and a mystery to my enquiring nephew.
