Insane in the Mom-Brain

Dear New and Expectant Mommies,

There's something you should know. It's rarely talked about, but I think it's an important fact for you to be aware of before it's too late.

Mommy brain does not go away. Ever.

Many first-timers think it's a pregnancy thing. Oh, look at silly old me, I've put on two mis-matching socks! Must be my "mommy brain"! I've heard preggers say, as if it's a passing thing. I usually flash them a crooked smile and mimic their laughter, as if I too have done that once before.

The truth is, I have - many times. And not just when I was pregnant. And not just mis-matched socks. Newbies, it only gets worse. Once the baby is out, you start to forget bigger things, like...

Nearing the end of a shower, completely forgetting if you've soaped up or not, and having to smell your skin to double check...

Driving up to your house, and having no recollection of how you got there...

Looking in the mirror when you arrive at work, only to realize that you've only applied makeup to one eye...

Being asked how old you are, and drawing a blank - followed by calculating on your fingers to "discover" your real age...

Showing up somewhere, only to realize that the plans you had made were for next week...

Ok, I may be alone on some of those things, but I've done them all (and more), and not just in the first few months. Ladies, my kids are (almost) 5, and 2, and my mommy brain is worse than ever.

Now that you know the truth, I send you away with some pointers to help you through the journey to everlasting mom-sanity.

First: Make lists and take notes. Write everything down, because your memory will no longer be reliable. Don't trust yourself to remember things, because sometimes you won't.

Second: It's not a sign that you've lost your mind. You are most likely overwhelmed and deprived of sleep.

Finally: You're not alone. I think it's safe to say that we're all in the same boat. Don't sweat the small stuff - laugh it off, cause hey, sometimes it can be kind of funny.

Sincerely,

Mama B

  2. How about reaching the end of a work day and realizing you put in 2 different earrings and no one told you all day.

  3. How true this is. For me, too. I have had that moment in the shower where I try to remember if I shampooed my hair or not. :)

  4. Lists are my true best friends now. Granted, I can never accomplish everything I write on them...they definitely keep me in line!
